Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Machines (CCBM)

Established in summer 2017 within CCBM, STEP is a two-week outreach program providing local STEM high school teachers and students interested in the STEM disciplines an opportunity to participate in research activities at UC Merced. Teachers and students participate in faculty-led learning and research activities in biophysics, biochemistry and bioengineering. The center hopes to expand the program in future years.

Other Highlights:

  • CCBM overview
  • STEM-focused research lectures from center affiliates
  • Scientific research ethics
  • Best practices in scientific research
  • Physics & chemistry labs
  • Campus and lab tours
  • Social activities
  • Lab & fire safety training
  • Next Generation Science Standards
  • Translating research into educational modules
  • Microscopy unit and confocal microscope activities

In the fall, participants return to the UC Merced campus to present a poster about their experiences, in a poster session open to the community.
