Piloted in Summer 2016 and held at UC Merced, GirlCode is a coding and web design workshop for 7-12 grade female students interested in coding. Participants benefit from experimental learning and professional mentoring provided by UC Merced faculty, staff and undergraduate students. Participants further develop leadership and team working abilities via “lunch social hour” and speaker series incorporated in the workshop. At present, the workshop is the only event of its kind in Merced area and receives a strong interest.

Outreach Details:
July 2016: Eighteen female students participated in our first workshop and learned the basics of coding and web-design using HTML and Java Script.
November 2016: A part two of the July 2016 workshop. Eight participants returned and continued coding lessons using Java Script and, in collaboration with Oracle Academy, SQL.
June 2017: Workshop was offered to sixteen students. Curriculum included use of HTML, Java Script, CSS, and SQL.
