Description: Established in summer 2017 within CCBM, STEP is a two-week outreach program providing local STEM high school teachers and students interested in the STEM disciplines an opportunity to participate in research activities at UC Merced. Teachers and students participate in faculty-led learning and research activities in biophysics, biochemistry and bioengineering. The center hopes to expand the program in future years.

The NSF-CREST Center for Cellular and Biomolecular Machines uses and interdisciplinary approach combining physical, biological and engineering methods to understand and control the functioning of multi-scale assemblies of biomolecules and cells, and to design and develop novel bio-inspired functioning machines ranging from designer cells and tissue to diagnostic and therapeutic devices. The center is also focused on ehancing biophysics, biochemistry, and bioengineering graduate and undergraduate education, as well as leading K-12 STEM outreach activities in the Merced area for teachers adn students.

Outreach: Summer 2017: One Merced high school teacher (El Capitan High School) and five high school students (El Capitan High School and Buhach Colony High School) completed the summer portion of STEP. Students work with faculty, project scientists, and graduate students.
